In meinem betagten ThinkPad T40 war von Beginn an kein WLAN verfügbar. Schon immer dachte ich mir: "Bald mach ich das mal". Nunja, der glückliche Zufall, dass ich schell und günstig an eine miniPCI WLAN-Karte kommen konnte, war eben erst jetzt da. Also gesehen, gekauft und eingebaut (Intel Pro Wireless 2200BG). Nach Aktivierung der Karte im BIOS teilte mir mein T40 kurz nach dem Start folgendes mit:

1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - Power off and remove the miniPCI network card.

Wie sich heraus stellte, werden nur bestimmte (teurere) miniPCI Karten erlaubt. Das BIOS hat eine Whitelist und überprüft die vorhandene Karte beim Start. Meine war offenbar nicht mit drauf. Nach etwas Suchen ergab sich, dass das Problem lösbar ist und das auf verschiedenen Wegen. Im ThinkWiki gibt as da ein paar gute Gedanken zu.

Eine Möglichkeit würd im deutschen ThinkPad Forum beschrieben. Dazu muss man (sofern man nicht selber kompilieren will) in einem älteren Knoppix booten (hier wird 4.0.2 benutzt. Das gäbe es hier). Man startet den Rechner ohne die miniPCI-Karte, drückt F12 für die Bootauswahl und steckt die Karte behutsam und vorsichtig in den Slot. Nun bootet man in dan Knoppix und läd sich modifizierte Intel-WLAN-Karten-Treiber herunter. Entpacken und dann wie im ThinkPad-Forum beschrieben, folgendes anstellen:

#cd ipw2200-1.0.3

#sh unload

#sh load

#ethtool -E ethX magic 0x2200 offset 0x08 value 0x12

Damit ändert ihr die Subsystem ID eurer orginalen Intel Karte von 27028086 auf 27128086)
WICHTIG: denkt daran das X durch euren Adapter zu ersetzen und die Zeile genau so ein zu geben! (von: Zerox86 enwähnt in ThinkPad-Forum und auch schon in anderen How-Tos geleses)

Letzendlich habe ich eine andere Möglichkeit benutzt. Diese wurde im ThinkWiki enwähnt und bei Command Tab beschrieben. Am einfachsten ist es, von diesem Image zu booten.

Danach funktionierte alles wie gewünscht :-).
